Our Jade Bonsai, Portulacaria afra (Elephant Bush), grows on a tall, mostly straight vertical trunk with its foliage concentrated up top in a neat, rounded crown — bonsai growers call this the formal upright style, prized for how convincingly it mimics a full-sized tree in miniature. It’s the most classically “tree-shaped” specimen in our range, straightforward and elegant.

Care at a glance

• Light: Bright light, 4–6 hours of sun or a very bright spot, to keep the crown compact.
• Water: Let soil dry out fully between waterings — check by lifting the top layer of pebbles if unsure. Roughly weekly in summer, far less in winter.
• Soil: Fast-draining bonsai or cactus mix beneath the pebble layer; avoid standing water.
• Feeding: A diluted balanced fertiliser once a month during the growing season.
• Pruning: Trim the crown lightly to maintain its rounded shape as new growth appears.
• Placement: Bright spot indoors year-round, or outdoors in partial shade. Protect from frost.
