Leaves you can’t help but touch

Part of jade’s charm is its leaves, and this specimen has some of the fullest around. Our Jade Bonsai, Portulacaria afra (Elephant Bush), carries noticeably large, plump, paddle-shaped leaves that cluster densely at the top of a short, thick, gently curved trunk — compact, tactile and satisfying in a way that photos genuinely undersell. The proportions here lean more “chunky little tree” than “delicate miniature,” which is exactly its appeal.

A warmer pot for a change

Unlike the plain grey cement most of our bonsai come in, this one sits in a tan, sandy-brown cement pot with a porous, stone-like texture — a warmer tone that pairs beautifully with the deep green of the leaves and suits earthy, boho or warm-toned interiors especially well.

Why this jade is easy to love

Being a succulent, Portulacaria afra stores water in those very leaves, making it naturally drought-tolerant and well suited to Pakistan’s warm climate. Its short, sturdy trunk and compact form mean it doesn’t demand much space, while its already-thick leaf coverage means it looks complete and lush from the day it arrives.

Care at a glance

• Light: Bright light, 4–6 hours of sun or a very bright spot, for the fullest, plumpest leaf growth.
• Water: Let soil dry out completely between waterings — roughly weekly in summer, far less in winter.
• Soil: Fast-draining bonsai or cactus mix; never let the pot sit in water.
• Feeding: A diluted balanced fertiliser once a month during the growing season.
• Pruning: Light trimming keeps the cluster of foliage neat and compact around the short trunk.
• Placement: Bright spot indoors year-round, or outdoors in partial shade. Bring in during frost or cold spells.
