A tree with movement

Most young bonsai grow straight up while they’re trained. This one had other plans. Our Jade Bonsai, Portulacaria afra (Elephant Bush), has been shaped along a dramatic S-curve trunk — bending one way, then the other — a classic bonsai styling technique used to give a young tree the sense of age and tension that usually takes decades to develop naturally. Soft green, rounded leaves cluster loosely along the upper stems, giving the tree an airy, still-developing silhouette rather than a dense, finished canopy. It’s a bonsai in progress, with real character already and plenty of room to keep shaping.

Set in a weathered hexagonal cement pot

The tree sits in a grey, six-sided cement planter with a naturally rough, aged texture — an understated container that lets the trunk’s curves take centre stage. It suits a quiet spot on a bookshelf just as well as a conversation piece on a work desk.

Why jade is a bonsai favourite

Portulacaria afra is a succulent, storing water in its leaves and stems, which makes it forgiving of missed waterings — the single most common way beginners lose a bonsai. It thrives in Pakistan’s heat, tolerates dry indoor air, and pushes new growth readily, so it recovers quickly from pruning mistakes. That makes this curved-trunk specimen an excellent base to keep training yourself.

Care at a glance

  • Light: Bright light, ideally 4–6 hours of direct or very bright indirect sun.
  • Water: Let soil dry out fully between waterings — roughly weekly in summer, much less in winter. Underwatering is safer than over.
  • Soil: Fast-draining bonsai or cactus mix; never let water pool in the pot.
  • Feeding: A diluted balanced fertiliser once a month, March through October.
  • Pruning: Pinch back new shoots to 2–3 leaf pairs to thicken the canopy along the curved trunk over time.
  • Placement: Bright window indoors year-round, or outdoors in partial shade. Protect from frost and cold winds.

Good to know

Jade responds well to training, so with light, regular pruning this tree’s canopy will fill in and densify season by season, while the trunk’s curve becomes an even more defining feature as the bark thickens and matures. As with all our bonsai, each tree is grown individually, so the one you receive will closely match the photo with its own natural variation.

A gift that keeps developing — a hands-on pick for a plant lover who enjoys shaping their own bonsai, and jade’s reputation as a symbol of prosperity makes it a meaningful choice for housewarmings, weddings, Eid or office gifting.
